What is a granite worktop?

Granite worktops are kitchen surfaces fabricated from 100% natural igneous rock, formed by slowly cooled magma deep beneath the earth's surface. Every slab is geologically unique — no two granite worktops in Ireland are identical. Granite is one of the hardest natural stones used in homes, offering exceptional heat resistance and a depth of character that engineered surfaces cannot replicate.

Why choose granite?

100% natural stone

Every slab is geologically unique — no two granite worktops are alike. Choose your own slab in person before fabrication.

Exceptional heat resistance

Granite shrugs off hot pans straight from the hob — the most heat-tolerant natural worktop material commonly fitted in Irish kitchens.

Hard-wearing for life

One of the hardest stones used in homes — granite worktops fitted decades ago still perform like new.

Timeless character

Deep movement, natural flecks and rich tones add genuine character that engineered surfaces simply can't replicate.

Excellent value at entry level

Starting prices match quartz, but characterful granite slabs often deliver more visual impact per euro spent.

Polished, honed or leathered

Choose a polished mirror finish, a softer honed matte, or a tactile leathered surface to suit your kitchen scheme.

Honest considerations

Where granite needs care.

Needs periodic sealing

Granite is naturally porous and benefits from sealing every 12–18 months to maintain stain resistance. It's a 10-minute job with an off-the-shelf sealer.

Slab variation

The biggest strength is also a consideration — what you see on a sample tile may differ from your full slab. Always view your specific slab in person before fabrication.

Weight and support

Granite is heavy. Floor structures, especially upstairs kitchens or older properties, may need a structural check before installation.

Best use cases

When granite is the right choice.

Ideal for

  • Traditional and country-style Irish kitchens where natural character matters
  • Heavy-use family kitchens that need genuine heat tolerance
  • Homeowners who want a one-of-a-kind worktop — no two slabs are alike
  • Period properties in Trim, Slane, Kells or Carlingford where natural stone fits the building's heritage
  • Cooks who routinely lift pans straight off the hob without reaching for a trivet

Consider another stone if

  • Homeowners wanting a perfectly uniform, consistent appearance (choose quartz)
  • Strict pure-white kitchen schemes — natural granite always has some mineral movement
  • Anyone unwilling to do a 10-minute reseal every 12–18 months (choose quartz or Dekton)
Kitchen styles

Granite for every kitchen style.

Classic shaker

Mid-tone granite (Kashmir White, Steel Grey) pairs beautifully with painted shaker units in sage, navy or off-white.

Heritage country

Warm-toned granite with rich movement suits Aga ranges, painted dressers and traditional country kitchens.

Modern luxury

Black Pearl or Black Cosmic with a leathered finish delivers a moody, premium edge in contemporary high-end kitchens.

Coastal Irish

Lighter granites with grey-blue tones complement bright coastal kitchens in Howth, Termonfeckin and Malahide.

Rustic farmhouse

Honed (matte) granite in earthy tones works beautifully with timber cabinetry and Belfast sinks.

Statement island

Exotic Brazilian granites — Blue Bahia, Patagonia — make show-stopping single-piece island tops.

Cleaning & maintenance

How to care for granite.

  1. 1

Wipe spills promptly with warm soapy water — particularly anything oily, acidic or coloured.

  2. 2

Reseal every 12–18 months using a granite-specific impregnating sealer (available in any builders' merchant). It takes ten minutes.

  3. 3

Avoid acidic kitchen cleaners — no lemon-based products, no vinegar sprays. Use a granite-safe cleaner or simply soap and water.

  4. 4

Always use a chopping board. Granite won't scratch easily, but you'll blunt your knives.

  5. 5

Granite is highly heat-resistant — hot pans straight off the hob are usually fine, though a trivet protects your sealer and prolongs its life.

  6. 6

For deeper marks (rare on sealed granite), a dedicated stone-stain remover poultice will draw the stain out without damaging the surface.

Comparison

Granite vs Quartz.

Granite and quartz are the two most popular kitchen worktops in Ireland. Granite is 100% natural, more heat-resistant and full of character. Quartz is engineered, lower-maintenance and more visually consistent.

Common questions

Granite worktop FAQs.

Is granite worktop heat resistant?

+

Yes — granite is one of the most heat-resistant surfaces available for kitchens. You can place a hot pan directly from the hob onto a sealed granite worktop without damage. We still recommend a trivet to prolong the life of your sealer.

Does granite need sealing?

+

Yes. Granite is naturally porous, so we recommend a granite-safe impregnating sealer every 12–18 months. It's a quick DIY job — wipe on, leave for 15 minutes, buff off. Properly sealed granite is highly stain-resistant.

How thick are granite worktops?

+

Standard slabs come in 20mm and 30mm thicknesses. 30mm is the most popular for Irish kitchens. For chunky island tops, we can build to 60mm or beyond using mitred edges.

Can I see my granite slab before fabrication?

+

Yes — and we strongly recommend it for natural stone. Every granite slab is geologically unique, and the slab you choose will differ from any sample tile. We arrange viewings before fabrication.

Does granite stain?

+

Sealed granite is highly stain-resistant. Unsealed or poorly sealed granite can absorb oil, wine or strong colours over time. Keep your sealer fresh and granite will perform beautifully for decades.

Is granite outdated?

+

Not at all. Modern granites — leathered finishes, honed surfaces, exotic Brazilian slabs — are highly current. The 1990s commercial brown granite look is dated, but contemporary granite specification is firmly in fashion in 2025.

What is the best granite for a Dublin kitchen?

+

It depends on the kitchen style. For modern Dublin renovations, Black Pearl, Steel Grey or a leathered Black Cosmic look stunning. For traditional period Dublin homes, Kashmir White or Verde Ubatuba sit beautifully with painted shaker cabinetry.
